My current research is on death and dying across cultures. I also continue my research into arts practice and well-being. As a grant writer and program evaluator, I am most interested in projects that draw on traditional culture. I use my academic training to help design programs with clear outcomes and measurable goals, which increases likelihood of grant funding.
Iʻll be presentaing at the anual conference of the International Council on Music and Dance in Wellington, Aotearoa (NZ) in January, 2025
You'll find my music in about 25 films of various length, mostly produced in Hawai'i. I've collaborated musically with artists from a number of cultures and am usually happiest mixing cultures and styles. I began playing piano a long time ago and am most comfortable on keyboards, flutes, and santur/hammered dulcimer.
Hereʻs a piece I did

Stephen Fox, PhD holds a Doctorate in Cross-Cultural Psychology from Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand and master's degrees in psychology and social work from University of Hawaii at Manoa. His primary research studies how participation in traditional ethnocultural arts such as hula and kapa haka affects psychological well-being. Fox lectures on psychology, conflict resolution, and world music in the University of Hawai‘i system and consults as a grant writer and program designer/evaluator. He is the author of the SAGE Publications text Culture and Psychology (2020). Fox also is a musician and composer with multiple film and television credits. He has composed over 20 musical scores for film and may be the world's only psycho-ethnomusicologist. That's psychological ethnomusicology, not, um... never mind..
